The moment that started this

A free tool became a $19/month bill — so we built the answer

For years, Wave was the answer when a freelancer or small business asked “what is a good free invoicing tool?” It was genuinely free, and people built their whole billing workflow on top of it. Then the model changed: the features small businesses relied on moved behind a $19/monthsubscription, and the “free” tool became a recurring bill.

That is fee creep, and it is everywhere in software. A product gets you in the door for free, waits until your data and your habits live inside it, and then starts charging for the things you can no longer easily leave. We did not like being on the receiving end of that — so we built the alternative we wished we had.

A small business and a client shaking hands

The moment that started this

“Wave was free. Then one day, getting paid cost $19 a month.”

Millions of small businesses built their billing on a free tool — and woke up to a subscription. We thought that deserved a better answer.

That receipt should never surprise you.

In plain terms

What is PayNugget, and why does it exist?

PayNugget is free invoicing and payments software for US small businesses. It keeps invoicing and getting paid at $0/month, leads with low-cost ACH bank payments, and lets you export all your data in one click. We built it as the honest answer to free tools that quietly became monthly subscriptions.

We make money the same way you do — when a payment actually lands.
Why we charge the way we do

PayNugget keeps invoicing and getting paid at $0/month. We earn money the honest way: a small processing fee only when a client actually pays you, plus an optional $12/month Pro plan if you want power features. No subscription is required to do the core job — send a professional invoice and collect the money.

And because the best protection against fee creep is the freedom to walk away, you can export all your data in one click at any time. If we ever stop earning your business, leaving is trivial. That keeps us honest.

What we believe

The principles behind every decision

These are not slogans. They are the rules we hold ourselves to when we decide what to build and how to charge for it.

  • Free should stay free. Invoicing and getting paid cost $0/month — not a trial, not a teaser. We make money when you do, not by waiting to charge for what you already depend on.
  • Lead with the cheaper rail. ACH bank payments cost a fraction of cards — about $4 versus $29 on a $1,000 invoice. We put the low-cost option first. We do not claim to beat the ~2.9% card network rate.
  • Your data is yours. One-click export, a portable format, no lock-in. Leaving should never be a punishment.
  • Talk to a human. When something goes wrong with getting paid, you should be able to reach a real person who can actually fix it.

Where we stand

Honest about what we are — and what we are not

  • US-only, for now

You need a US bank account to receive payments. International support is on the roadmap.

  • No magic card pricing

We don't claim to beat the standard ~2.9% card network fee. Our savings come from ACH, $0 subscription, and owning your data.

  • Card data lives at Stripe

Stripe is PCI-certified, so sensitive card numbers never sit on our servers.

  • Under-promise, over-deliver

We'd rather be plain about our limits than oversell. That's the whole point.

If you are comparing options, we put the full breakdown next to the tools you already know — start with the Wave comparison or browse invoicing by profession. You can read more about how we protect your information on our security page, what we collect in our privacy policy, and the rules of the road in our terms of service.

Thanks for reading this far. We built PayNugget for people who do real work and just want to get paid for it — and we plan to keep it that way.

About PayNugget: FAQ

Straight answers about who we are and how we make money.

Who is behind PayNugget?
PayNugget is built by a small, independent team that got tired of watching free invoicing tools quietly turn into monthly bills. We are based in the US and focused entirely on small-business billing.
How does PayNugget make money if invoicing is free?
We earn a small processing fee only when a client actually pays you, and we offer an optional Pro plan at $12/month for power features. There is no subscription required to invoice and get paid.
Is PayNugget really free, or is this another bait-and-switch?
Sending invoices and getting paid is $0/month with no usage caps designed to push you onto a paid plan. We make our money the same way you do — when payment lands. You can export all your data in one click if we ever let you down.
Why only the US right now?
Payments, tax, and banking rules differ a lot by country. We chose to do US invoicing and ACH bank payments really well first, rather than spread thin. International support is on the roadmap.
What happens to my data if I leave?
It is yours. Export your customers and invoices in one click, anytime, in a portable format. We never hold your records hostage behind an upgrade or a cancellation flow.
